Hello Winter in Oz fans! This month, we are looking at how SNOW is magically created in Oz, how it has made its magical mark on the Land of Oz, and how you can experience it for yourself. So right off the bat, it should be stated that nowhere is it said in Baum's or Maguire's books (that I am aware) as to how SNOW in Oz (or elsewhere) is created magically; but there are some ideas that have been created, which we will discuss.
For now, just know that we just see the witches or queens of Oz create the snow by just waving their wands and it just appears. If you know more about the spell behind snow or something that is not listed here in this post, please feel free to comment below; but, as we start off our journey of magical snow, a SNOW TORNADO (shown above) sweeps us away, which was magically created by Miss One from The Wiz, and it has taken Dorothy (and us) to the Land of Oz in the wintertime.
Snow in Oz was first introduced in Baum's 1902 theatrical play of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, where an appearance of Locasta, the Good Witch of the North, calls upon the Snow Queen, King Frost, and the North to bring her snow to Oz in order to make the poppies lose their deadly power. In the play, Locasta gives quite a spell in this production to call upon the snowy elements, and in this production was portrayed by actor Bert Dean (in drag). Locasta then magically produces the snow since she is charge of weather elements like snow and ice. If you are interested in reading the snow spell casting, you can find it here in the actual play script. What a snowy set!
This action was again used in the 1939 film as Glinda, The Good Witch of the North, waved her wand and created snow magically to diminish the power of the deadly poppies, as seen below. We all remember that scene, but no spell or incantation was used, just a wave of her wand.
So, now that we know how snow has first appeared in the Land of Oz, I would like to discuss some of the ways as to how snow in the Land of Oz is magically created? Right off the bat, I know that one way to create magical snow comes from Boomerang's Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, which gave us our first glimpse at a snow spell said out loud by Ozma in the episode, "Christmas in Oz". You can check it out early on in the clip below, as it contains the spell that Ozma has said to create snow.
The next adaptation of snow in Oz comes in another Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz episode entitled, "Snow Place Like Home". In this episode, Dorothy reflects on how it snowed in Kansas and in an effort to appease Dorothy's homesickness, Ozma had an idea that involved a snow globe. The magical snow globe activates, when shaken, and causes it to snow in the place where the snow globe is activated. If broken, the place will be cursed to experience eternal winter. Check out a clip from the episode below as that is now two ways that snow is magically created in the Land of Oz.
Now, if you want your own Snow Globe from the Land of Oz, you can find it here from The Land of Oz amusement park in North Carolina website (snow globe pictured below). Note: it might not be in stock currently, so be sure to put it on your bucket list. Do you have another Oz-themed snow globe? What happens when you shake it? Does it have music? Let me know in the comments below.
Outside of the media adaptations that include snow, there are some books that also include snow; so, I will let you check out that out right here from the Oz Index. Fascinating enough, there was a Royal Historian who has the name JACK SNOW. You can also check out his books on that same site by searching by author (or see the image below). He wrote famous books like A Murder in Oz and The Shaggy Man of Oz. I enjoy the Oz Index because it allows me to find my next great Ozian read as there are just so many to choose from. Which Jack Snow book do you enjoy? Please comment below.
Well, that should just about cover all the Snow in the Land of Oz pieces. Do you have any snow in the Land of Oz pieces you would like to share with others? Please feel free to post them below. As a departing piece, it should be noted that snow in the Land of Oz was drawn in for The Road to Oz comic by Eric Shanower, when our protagonists visit Foxville (see below). It is quite impressive, even though in the book, there is no snow. Also, it does not declare anyway that the snow is created but is just present there. So, feel free to check all those fun options presented above as you celebrate the beautiful winter month of January; and, until next time, we'll be seeing somewhere into the Oz-verse.

AuthorMy name is Vinkus Ken and I have been a long time fan of many things in Oz and how their world truly does emulate much of ours. Did you know that they have a flag of their own? Or did you know that they have a law about only having 9 jurors in their courts? Also, Oz has a court system! I like to introduce facts that seem meaningless and bring meaning to them by comparing them to our world. So, come along on this journey and enjoy the ride. |
